Which Motorcycle Bikes Category Is Best For You?
Do you want to hit the open road for a weekend or carve some dirt out of your local mountains? Knowing which motorcycle bikes suit you and your needs will allow you to spend time researching the perfect bike in that category. There are 3 main types of motorcycles with many sub categories within those... street bikes, off road and dual purpose bikes. Street bikes are designed for riding on paved roads but there are many types of street bikes to choose from. The main three are Cruisers, Sport bikes and touring bikes, though there are a few other variations on these. Cruisers are bikes where the feet position are always forward and the handlebars are usually high so the hands are up. They are built for long distance comfort, not speed or high control, but have passionate followers and owners. The most famous cruiser would be the Harley-Davidson Chopper but other well known cruisers are Excelsior-Henderson and Indian. If speed and maneuverability is your thing then you are a sports bike man, also known as a performance bike. The focus is on high performance engines with advanced breaking and suspension on lightweight bodies with wider and larger tires. Different classes are available starting from 125 cc engine such as the Suzuki GS500 up to the hyper sport bike with 1100 cc to 1400 cc such as the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 which can get from 0–60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Finally a new brand of touring bike has been manufactured with weather protection and comfort in mind for long distances. High screens offer wind protection and the fuel tank is large in order to get further between fill ups. Harley-Davidson Electra Glide and the Honda Goldwing are examples of full-dress tourers. If that all sounds too clean for you and you want to burn some mud then off road dirt bikes may be more your thing. They are lighter in weight and have smaller engines than street bikes and can be specialized for some bike sports such as trial bikes, track racing, motorcross and rallies. To accommodate these sports they are simple in construction with large wheels and long suspension travel. Each bike's engine is different dependent upon the sport, they can be 2 or 4 stroke and range from 125cc to 660 cc. Dual sport motorcycle bikes are a compromise between on and off road bikes. They are off road bikes adapted to be made legal for street riding. Some can be used for the touring with the ability to take them off road on tracks for some adventure riding such as the BMW R1200GS Adventure which is a heavy 256 kg. Once you have decided on a type of bike there are many other factors to consider before the final purchase. If your budget is tight or you'll be touring long distances then you want readily available and cheap motorcycle bike parts. Checking the large online discount sites for your bike parts will ensure you can purchase online and bypass the local shop markups. Also if you are planning on buying a used 1984 Honda XL100S will you be able to get honda motorcycle accessories and parts for your needs? If you are planning on taking your bike off road for some camping and are considering a cargo trailer or even a camper trailer you need to check that your bike can attach a hitch without too much modification and also tow that much weight. Also if you only have a mid size car but intend on transporting your bike then make sure it is a weight your hitch class can comfortably pull or carry. Doing the research before you buy will mean there won't be any disappointment afterwards. |
