Why Purchase Aluminum Motorcycle Trailers Over Other Materials?
If you are in the market for a motorcycle trailer there are several reasons to consider aluminum trailers over the rest. It is worth discussing trailers in general to then see why lightweight aluminum is a huge advantage. The limitations with trailers are size and weight dependent on your car size, make and model. Different cars can use different class hitches and different hitch classes allow different maximum weight capacities. Knowing the maximum weight of you load ie bike, bikes or cargo for a tow behind bike trailer will leave you with the maximum weight of your trailer (assuming the load is not over the trailers maximum weight capacity). Keep in mind you also don't want to load your vehicle up to it's maximum weight capacity unless you can help it for safety reasons and also fuel economy, the heavier the load, the more gas you'll require. There are 3 main materials you will find in trailers, or a combination of the three... steel, aluminum or fiberglass. Steel is the cheaper more durable but heavier of the three. Fiberglass is the more expensive, flexible in design, lighter but not widely used unless it is on cargo trailers but you can also get some enclosed motorcycle trailers. Aluminum has some benefits from both steel and fiberglass. It has some flexibility with design though the majority of trailers are boxy but they can look great with a great paint finish. It is low maintenance and durable, though many manufacturers still use steel on the heavy duty areas. But the main advantage when it comes down to dollars is it's weight. It is lightweight and wins hands down over steel. If you are traveling with a touring trailer or transporting your bike and other items then you want the weight to go to your cargo and then when the cargo is light, you don't want to be churning through gas just pulling the trailer. If you have the money and style is important then you will most likely go with fiberglass or gelcoat exteriors. If you just want a lightweight trailer then Discount Ramps have an aluminum trailer range with their Moto-Go-B with black powdered coat, 400 lb weight capacity, 200 lb trailer weight for $1,499 plus shipping. For slightly different different prices you can get variations on their finish or chrome instead of aluminum wheels. There is also the Super sport range with 4" and 5" trailers in black or diamond plate from $1,295 as well. |
